Get Your Blood Pressure Checked at Your Local Pharmacy

High blood pressure (hypertension) usually has no symptoms, but it is one of the biggest causes of heart attacks and strokes in the UK. The good news? It’s easy to find and easy to treat.

The NHS Blood Pressure Check Service is a free, convenient way to stay on top of your health without needing to book a GP appointment.

Who is this service for?

You can get a free blood pressure check at participating pharmacies if you:

  • Are aged 40 or over.

  • Do not already have a diagnosis of high blood pressure.

  • Have not had your blood pressure checked by a healthcare professional in the last 6 months.

Note: If you are under 40, you may still be eligible at the pharmacist’s discretion—for example, if you have a family history of high blood pressure.

How it works

  1. The Check: A trained member of the pharmacy team will take your reading in a private consultation room. It’s quick, painless, and similar to the check you’d have at a GP surgery.

  2. The Results: They will explain what your numbers mean.

    • Normal: You’ll get healthy living advice to keep it that way.

    • High: You may be offered an all-day monitor (ABPM) or referred to your GP.

    • Very High: The pharmacist will arrange an urgent appointment with your doctor.

What is an ABPM Meter?

If your initial check shows a high reading, the pharmacist might ask you to wear an Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) device.

Why use an all-day monitor?

A single reading in a pharmacy or clinic doesn’t always show the full picture.

  • Beats “White Coat Syndrome”: Many people feel slightly anxious in a medical setting, which can cause their blood pressure to spike temporarily.

  • Real-life Data: The ABPM measures your blood pressure as you go about your normal day—working, relaxing, and even sleeping.

  • Better Accuracy: It takes readings every 30 minutes during the day and every hour at night, giving your healthcare team an average that is much more reliable for a diagnosis.

Wearing the device

  • The device consists of a small digital monitor worn on a belt around your waist, connected to a cuff on your arm.

  • It’s lightweight and designed to be worn under your clothes.

  • You simply return it to the pharmacy later that day or the next, and the pharmacist will download the data to discuss your results.

Why get checked today?

Finding out you have high blood pressure is the first step toward preventing serious illness. Small lifestyle changes or simple medications can bring your levels down and significantly reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke.

No appointment is usually necessary. Just pop into your local pharmacy and ask for an NHS Blood Pressure Check.
